Why sometimes a breast-fed baby seems to be hungry?

Should breast feeding be discontinued in such cases?

If a baby cries a lot and refuses to feed despite all efforts, is it due to inadequate breast milk or some other problem?

After a normal delivery or a Caesarian, if there is inadequate breast feed or no milk at all, how long should one wait? 

How could breast feeding started and maintained?

Breast milk is called liquid gold as it has all the nutrients for a developing baby in right amount and right proportion therefore moms should always be guided and encouraged. Some new moms face breast-feeding problems which may lead to discontinuation of nursing.

Why to give first watery secretions after delivery?
This first watery secretion is called LIQUID GOLD, it should never be wasted as it’s full of all the nutrients and protective antibodies for a new born. All these help in developing a strong immune system.

When milk production starts after a delivery?
It generally starts from third to sixth day after delivery, however it can vary person to person.

If breast feed is not coming or it’s in adequate, does baby needs some top feed?
It’s a common misconception of new moms, but you should know that your body supports the growth of a baby for whole nine months of pregnancy. And during this time period it is also fully prepared for providing the right nourishment in right amount for the newborn.

Are there any breast structural problems that may affect nursing?
Sometimes condition of inverted nipples can arise anxiety about milk production, but it is not affected as glandular tissue of breast produces milk so frequent breast pumping could be helpful.

Is there a possibility of non-production of milk?
Yes, there are some rare cases of hormone imbalance or very low prolactin levels, but they can be treated medically.

Why sometimes it seems that baby is not satisfied?
It is sometimes because of pain in breasts due to improper latching or mispositioning of baby to breast. Always remember pain is not normal, guiding mothers about proper breast-feeding technique could simply help.

Is breast feeding painful?
Normally, it is not painful. It is just a feeling of pull, if you are experiencing pain then see your doctor as there could be a problem in latching of baby, or a local problem in breast.

What could be the local cause of breast pain?
Any local breast infection, cracked nipples or engorged breasts could cause pain.

What is the reason for baby not getting enough?
Baby does not get enough milk due to improper latching as mothers only hold the nipple part of breast, which is only the milk outlet of breast tissue. This results in improper latching and inadequate sucking by newborn.

What is proper positioning of baby? 
The simple and accurate position method is tummy to tummy with full body of baby (head and body) turned towards mother. The incorrect method is baby body straight and only head bent and supported towards mother.

How is proper latching established?
The first step for successful breast feeding is that mother and baby should be comfortable while breast feeding. Baby should be held gently and it should be sucking the breast, NOT only the nipple part, this means while baby is feeding nipple and areola (brown part of breast) should NOT  be visible under the chin of baby, some of it could be seen near nose.

How can breast feeding be established?
The milk let down reflex is through breast suckling, frequent breast feeding and breast pumps could help in establishing proper feeding.

How long it takes to establish adequate breast feeding?
Generally, milk production is more than adequate for a newborn. But in cases of hormone imbalances, low prolactin levels or certain medical conditions breast milk could be reduced. It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks for proper breast milk production.

Soothers? Are they helpful?
Some babies like suckling before going to sleep, but a soother should be avoided and it should never replace feed.
